Uploading an eyeglass prescription should be the easy part of ordering online. Most problems are not caused by complicated technology; they come from a cropped corner, a reflected ceiling light, a faint plus or minus sign, or a photo that shows the numbers but not the patient and prescriber details.

A clean upload gives both the recognition system and the order review team a reliable source to check. Use a current eyeglass prescription

Start with a prescription written for eyeglasses, not a contact lens prescription. The two are not interchangeable. Check the issue and expiration dates and make sure the prescription is still valid under the rules that apply where it was written.

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission explains that patients are entitled to a copy of their eyeglass prescription after a refractive eye exam. Its consumer guide to prescription rights also notes that online sellers commonly provide a way to upload a copy. If your PD is not printed on the page, ask your prescriber whether it was measured and can be provided.

Photograph the entire page

Place the prescription on a flat, contrasting surface. Hold the camera directly above it rather than at an angle. Include all four corners and leave a small border around the page. A straight, complete image is easier to read than a tight crop.

Before you take the photo, look for these details:

  • The patient name is visible.
  • The exam or issue date and expiration date can be read.
  • The prescriber name and contact information are not cut off.
  • Both OD (right eye) and OS (left eye) rows are fully visible.
  • SPH, CYL, AXIS, ADD, prism, and PD values are included where prescribed.

If the prescription has notes on a second page, upload the page that contains the complete optical values and keep the additional page available in case the team asks for it.

Avoid glare, shadows, and ā€œsmartā€ edits

Overhead lights can erase a minus sign without making the whole picture look blurry. Move the paper near a window with indirect daylight, or turn off the light that is reflecting from the page. Watch for the shadow of your phone across the OD or OS columns.

Do not use a beauty filter, document effect, or aggressive sharpening. High contrast can make thin handwriting break apart, while automatic background removal can trim printed lines. A normal, well-lit color photo is usually the safest source. PNG, JPG, and standard phone photos are all suitable when the text remains clear.

Zoom in before you upload

Open the photo on your phone and zoom in until one eye's row fills the screen. You should be able to distinguish:

  • Plus and minus signs. A missing minus sign changes the prescription.
  • Decimal points. -0.75 and -7.50 are not remotely the same value.
  • OD and OS. The right and left eye must not be swapped.
  • CYL and AXIS. AXIS is written as a number from 1 to 180 and should not be confused with lens power.
  • ADD. This near addition matters for progressive or multifocal orders.

If any one of those details is uncertain to you, it will also be uncertain in an automated reading. Retake the image rather than guessing.

Compare the recognized values with the original

After upload, review every populated field against the image. Automated recognition is a convenience, not permission to skip the check. Read one row at a time from left to right, first OD and then OS. Confirm that blank fields on the prescription have not been turned into zeros or unrelated values.

Keep frame and lens choices separate from prescription data

Prescription values describe the optical correction. Lens index, photochromic color, coatings, and frame color are choices you make for the finished pair. Do not alter SPH or CYL because a certain lens option looks more suitable; the prescription comes from the prescriber, while the lens package is selected around it.
